EcoAction - Community Funding Program

Environment Canada

Last Verified: 2006-03-27

EcoAction is an Environment Canada program that encourages Canadians to take action in their communities in support of healthy environments.

Eligibility Criteria

Non-profit*, non-government groups can apply for funding. This includes community groups, environmental groups, service clubs, First Nations and aboriginal groups, associations and youth or seniors' organizations.

EcoAction encourages projects that protect, rehabilitate or enhance the natural environment, and build the capacity of communities to sustain activities into the future. Projects require matching funds or in-kind support from other sponsors. Funding support is available for projects that address Environment Canada's priority environmental issues:

  • Climate Change
  • Clean Air
  • Clean Water
  • Nature

The deadlines for applying are February 1 and October 1 annually. Contact your regional Environment Canada office to discuss your project ideas and for a copy of the Applicant's Guide.

Summary

The Community Funding Program supports organizations in taking environmental action in their communities. It can provide funding for projects that meet the following program goals: have a positive impact on the environment, provide opportunities for Canadians to take action at the local level, get more people to practice environmentally responsible behaviors and address priority environmental issues.

The maximum funding available is $100 000, but the average amount is normally around $25 000. The program will provide only up to 50% of eligible project costs. (This 50% represents all federal funding, including EcoAction.)

*Note: "non-profit" also known as nonprofit organizations, non profit organizations, not-for-profit organizations, voluntary organizations and volunteer organizations.
