Are Canadian-controlled Manufacturing Firms Less Productive than their Foreign-controlled Counterparts?
Working Paper #31
|
Abstract |
|
Exports account for more than 40 percent of Canada's gross domestic product, and imports play an equally significant role in the Canadian economy. However, Canada's productivity and real income performance has been lagging behind that of other members of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, including the U.S. In fact, Canada's productivity level is below that of the United States in most manufacturing industries.
The main goal of this paper is to:
explore the role of foreign-controlled firms with respect to Canada's poor manufacturing productivity record to explain whether the gap has widened or narrowed during the 1990s what factors have influenced the productivity performance.
