EIP Employment Incentives Program

Workers Compensation Board of Nova Scotia

Last Verified: 2005-03-15

The Employment Incentives Program (EIP) is a program that offers financial as well as technical assistance to employers who are able to provide workers/employees, who have been injured on the job, a chance to re-enter the workforce.

Eligibility Criteria

Employers in Nova Scotia must be interested in employing workers who have been injured on the job

Eligible Area

Nova Scotia

Summary

Wage Assistance
The EIP offers wage assistance in the form of a forgivable loan, paid in decreasing amounts over a pre-approved employment period. Depending on the terms of an employer's individual EIP contract, the Workers' Compensation Board will cover the full amount of the employee's salary and benefits for the first period of the work term. The coverage will then decrease to 50% and then to 25% in periodic stages over the remaining wage assistance period.

Wage assistance is available to employers who are reasonably certain that the worker's/employee's full-time employment will continue after the EIP contract ends. And, if it does, the employer's EIP wage assistance loan will be forgiven.

A regional Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Counsellor may also help identify one or more technical incentives to maximize the employer's business as well as the employee's potential. The incentives may include:

Workplace Modifications - The WCB may design and finance a fully accessible workplace to ensure that the worker's/employee's safety and employer's operational needs are met. The workplace modification incentives range from providing simple cushioned standing mats to custom-made equipment such as:

1.  Height-adjustable desks
2.  Ergonomic chairs
3.  Raised foot rests
4.  Wheelchair ramps

Technological Enhancements - Depending on worker needs abilities and the requirements of the job, EIP can offer technological support. Some technical modifications may include:

1.  Wrist rests
2.  Enlarged or split keyboards
3.  Large-screen monitors
4.  Voice-activated command consoles

Injury Cost Protection
Any payments the WCB makes to compensate an employee for an old or new workplace injury during the EIP period will not be charged against an employer's WCB account. In this way the employer will avoid having such costs added into the calculation of his/her WCB assessment rates.

EIP Applications
Simply call the EIP Hotline to arrange for a no-obligation meeting with a the Coordinator, Employment Market Services or a VR Counsellor in your area. The VR Counsellor will then match employers with trained and motivated employees.
