The Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a unique nine digit number used in the administration of various Canadian government programs.

Eligibility Criteria

Every person who works in Canada is required to have a SIN.

All Canadian provinces and territories.

Eligible Activities

This number is used for deductions on payroll such as Employment Insurance, Canada Pension Plan/Quebec PensionPlan, income tax, etc.

The Social Insurance Number (SIN) is administered by Social Insurance Registration (SIR) located in Bathurst, New Brunswick.

What You Need to Know

As an employer, you must:

  • ask to see the SIN card of all new employees when they are hired, and the employee must show it to you within three days of the start date of employment;
  • obtain the correct SIN of your employee to ensure the deductions on your payroll can be made (such as Employment Insurance, Canada Pension Plan/Quebec Pension Plan, income tax, etc.);
  • record the SIN as it appears on the employee's SIN card;

Your employee's SIN is a confidential number, restricted to income-related information and is to be protected against misuse. If you suspect that a SIN is being used fraudulently, call toll-free 1 800 206-7218.
