1.  Financial Assistance

Accessible Transportation Assistance Program (ATAP)  

The purpose of ATAP is the enhancement of existing inclusive transportation services through the purchase of accessible vehicles. Up to $10,000 is available for a used vehicle and $20,000 for a new vehicle. Administered by Transportation and Public Works, but funded by Housing and Municipal Affairs (Funding renewed on a yearly basis).

Community ACCESS-Ability- Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations

The Community ACCESS-Ability Program improves access to community facilities and venues for persons with disabilities by providing financial assistance in the form of a grant for accessibility-related capital improvements.

EIP: Employment Incentives Program - Nova Scotia Workers' Compensation Board

The Employment Incentives Program (EIP) is a program offered by Workers Compensation Board of Nova Scotia that provides financial as well as technical assistance to employers who are able to provide workers/employees, who have been injured on the job, a chance to re-enter the workforce.

Employability Assistance for People with Disabilities Program

Funded by the federal and provincial governments, the main objective is to train or retrain individuals.  The program is available to any physically or mentally disabled Nova Scotian, 16 years of age or older not currently in the school system.

Mattinson Endowment Fund Scholarship for Disabled Students

For permanent Canadian residents who are enrolled in a first undergraduate degree program.  All disciplines are eligible.  Awards of $2,500 are available for one year.

On-the-Job Training - Nova Scotia Workers' Compensation Board

The On-the-Job (OJT) Program offers assistance to employers of Nova Scotia who are interested in training workers that have been injured on the job.   Employers must provide valuable one-on-one training and experience to the employee selected.

Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities - Social Development Canada

The objective of the Opportunities Fund is to generate innovative activities which help persons with disabilities prepare for, obtain and keep employment or self-employment.  Participants must not be eligible for employment benefits assistance or similar provincial and territorial programs.

The Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program (RRAP) for Persons with Disabilities -
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation - CMHC

The Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Program (RRAP) for Persons with Disabilities offers financial assistance to homeowners and landlords to undertake accessibility work to modify dwellings occupied or intended for occupancy by persons with disabilities.

TEAM Work Cooperative Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities- Affirmative Industry Association of Nova Scotia

The Opportunity Fund for Persons with Disabilities provides financial assistance to unemployed persons with disabilities to help them prepare for, obtain and keep employment or self-employment. Applicants must be unemployed persons with disabilities living in the Halifax Regional Municipality and must be ineligible for other funding sources.  This is a national program, however, the fund is administered differently in each region.  The national program information can be found in the record above entitled: Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities - Service Canada.

The Andrew Peacock Fund for Enterprise Development

Administered by the Affirmative Industry Association of Nova Scotia, the Andrew Peacock Fund for Enterprise Development provides financial support in the form of loans for new and existing businesses run by entrepreneurs with disabilities. The fund assists all entrepreneurs with disabilities, including mental health consumers and includes a mentorship program.

Assistive Devices Industry Office (ADIO) - Industry Canada

The Assistive Devices Industry Office (ADIO) is a part of Industry Canada, a Federal Government department which provides support to Canada's business sector, while also looking after the interests of the consumer.  

ADIO works with Canadian assistive device developers, producers and vendors, providing them with advice, support and market intelligence.  ADIO also provides its colleagues in other parts of Industry Canada with the information needed to ensure the rights and needs of consumers with disabilities are respected.

Assistive Technology Centre

A non-profit charitable organization whose mandate is to create solutions through technology to enable full participation in all aspects of social and economic life for individuals with disabilities; to improve access to education, employment opportunities, independent living and general information through current use of technology; and to be a first step in establishing a network of technology access services on the South Shore of Nova Scotia and beyond.

Technical Resource Centre (TRC)

The focus of TRC is to provide a reference for community organizations and agencies in Nova Scotia that service citizens facing disability and health challenges.  The TRC has adopted as its Role to:  "Conduct research, develop knowledge-based resources, disseminate information, increase awareness, facilitate professional development, and present a range of technology solutions to consumers and professionals that encourages "best practices" for appropriate, functional and cost effective technology interventions."

Accessibility Checklist Download and Searchable Accessibility Index- Canadian Paraplegic Association, Nova Scotia

Is your business barrier free? Take a look at the Canadian Paraplegic Association Nova Scotia’s Accessibility Checklist Download, which conforms to the Nova Scotia Building Code. By completing the checklist and sending it to the association, a business can have its information included in the association's Searchable Accessibility Index – a data base of what is accessible and what is partially accessible in Nova Scotia . It is ideal for persons with disabilities seeking services such as accessible rental vehicles, taxi services and travel accommodations.

The site is designed so that persons can read the information and make decisions whether the site is accessible for them in their own unique disability. It is also a great way for a business to get an idea of what it can do and the standards involved in becoming more barrier free.

Disability Database - Statistics Canada

Statistics Canada maintains records on the prevalence of disability in Canada and the impact of disability on the life of Canadians with disabilities.  Topics included in these records are:  information on the existence, nature and severity of disability; the use of technical aids and services; data on persons with disabilities such as demographic, household, labour force, employment, education, transportation, and income.

Opening Horizons : Entrepreneurs with Disabilities who Have Made a Contribution to the Canadian Economy

This is a book of success stories about people with disabilities who have integrated into the entrepreneurial work force. The book profiles 12 people, with a variety of disabilities, who have achieved success in business. The project showcases the contribution these individuals have made to the Canadian economy and provides advice to businesses serving entrepreneurs with disabilities as well as to potential entrepreneurs.  This is a priced publication. The cost is $10.00 and this includes shipping, handling and HST.
