Information on the Public Registry

Requirements of the Conflict of Interest Code for Members of the House of Commons (the Code)

The Disclosure Statement is the initial document which a Member of the House must complete and file with the Office of the Ethics Commissioner. The Member is requested to disclose his or her private interests as well as those of his or her family members. The Disclosure Statement once filed with the Office of the Ethics Commissioner is a confidential document.

From the information provided in the Disclosure Statement, the Code requires the Ethics Commissioner to prepare a Disclosure Summary. This summary, which is a public document, sets out the source and nature, but not the amount, of income, assets and liabilities which exceed $10,000 in value. As well, the summary identifies any contracts held by the Member or family members with the Government of Canada and list the corporations in which the Member or family members hold an interest, along with the names of any affiliated companies.

Public Registry

In accordance with the Code, each Disclosure Summary is placed on the Public Registry which is available for public inspection at the Office of the Ethics Commissioner.

In addition, the Public Registry contains Declarations of Gifts or other Benefits, as well as Declarations of Sponsored Travel completed and filed by Members in accordance with the Code where these have a value exceeding $500.
