The Competition Bureau is seeking public comment on its Merger Enforcement Guidelines (Draft for Consultation March 2004) ("MEGs"), which describe how the Bureau analyzes a merger. The revised guidelines address legal and economic developments in competition law since the MEGs were published in 1991. For example, the new MEGs:
The Bureau is committed to developing enforcement and educational tools through an open and transparent process. Interested parties are invited to provide comments and/or suggestions on the revised guidelines by May 25, 2004. These can be submitted by e-mail, fax, or regular mail. All submissions will be made available to the public and will be posted on the Bureau's Web site, except where confidentiality is specifically requested. The Competition Bureau will review the comments received and publish a final document this summer. The Competition Bureau is an independent law enforcement agency that promotes and maintains fair competition so that all Canadians can benefit from competitive prices, product choice and quality service. It oversees the application of the Competition Act, the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act, the Textile Labelling Act and the Precious Metals Marking Act.
