To Whom Does This Apply?

Summary

ELIGIBILITY
If you wish to apply for a liquor licence, contact the Regulatory division of AGLC. Applicants for Class A, B, or C licences are required to provide a proposed food menu, floor plans and other related documentation in support of the proposal. A $200 non-refundable application fee is required if you decide to proceed. You are responsible for any expenses incurred in providing the AGLC with a submission. The AGLC determines if you are eligible for a licence. Individuals involved with the liquor application will be required to provide information about themselves. The applicant must have the right to occupy and control the premises.

DESCRIPTION
Classes of Liquor Licences

Class A Licence
This licence is issued for the sale and consumption of liquor in premises open to the public. Examples are dining rooms, lounges, taverns and night clubs.

Class B Licence
This class of licence is for premises that are open to people who have paid an entrance fee or who have purchased a ticket permitting use of the facility. Examples are airplanes, buses, convention centers, race tracks, recreational facilities, sports stadiums, theatres, trains, and water excursion craft.

Class C Licence
This class of licence is for the sale and consumption of liquor on premises that are not open to the public and are restricted to members or other defined individuals. Examples are canteens, private clubs, institutions, and travellers' lounges.

Class D Licence
The holder of this licence is authorized to sell liquor specified on the licence for off-premises consumption. Examples are retail liquor stores and hotel off sales.

Class E Licence
This class of licence must be obtained to manufacture liquor in Alberta. The holder of a Class A licence may also apply for a brew pub licence to brew beer providing the Class A licence is in the same building as the brew pub brewing facility. Examples are distilleries, wineries, breweries, and brew pubs.

Some establishments have more than one licence. For example, a hotel may have two Class A licences, one each for its restaurant and tavern, and a class D licence for off sales.
