Linguistic Orientation

The School is now offering linguistic orientation sessions throughout the Québec region. Linguistic orientation is a process that seeks to evaluate the skills of future language training students in order to assess the amount of time that each student will need to spend in the classroom. As a result of this process, students with similar skills are put in classes of the same level together. Linguistic orientation used to be offered only in the Montreal area but is now being offered in outer regions of Québec, making the School’s services more readily available to its clients.

Recently, in Matane, 40 non-statutory students used the School’s service to begin their language training experience. The students have now begun their courses.

New blended learning opportunity

A blended learning approach is now being used in the Québec region for second language learning based on work situations. Students meet a teacher in the classroom once a week and complete activities on a CD Rom specially adapted for the School’s students. This blended learning approach gives students the opportunity to partake in training using current technology, while benefiting from an exchange of personal knowledge in an interactive classroom setting.

The Interdepartmental Committee on Continuing Education (ICCE) acknowledges Marc Savard’s contribution

photo Marc Savard On June 7, the ICCE marked the contribution of Marc Savard (Industry Canada) who has been president of the Committee for the last two years. His involvement enabled the ICCE to establish a solid foundation on which we will build a strong network of learning experts. Pictured in the photo are (from left to right) the ICCE’s new president, Christian David from PWGSC, Marc Savard and Richard Gagnon, Regional Director of the School and ICCE promoter.

The linguistic co-development project

The Language Training Centre in the Quebec region is currently developing a new second language training initiative: the Linguistic Co-Development Project. They are now entering Phase II of the pilot project, offering professional training in participants’ second language as an alternative to non-statutory language training.

Professional development courses in the learner’s second language will be offered to middle managers and front-line workers in the Fall and Winter School sessions at as many sites as possible across the province.

Additionally, the Centre is preparing a second pilot project in coordination with Collège Shawinigan, one of Quebec’s many Cégeps, to offer statutory B-level language training, in the hopes of developing a new, more accessible service delivery model for the Quebec Region.

The hard work and dedication devoted to these projects will result in an increase in the number of places available for language training in the province. This is yet another example of the School’s dedication to providing excellent customer service in both official languages.
