Executives in Transition

Introduction

The Canadian Centre for Management Development commissioned a two-year project on Executives in Transition by Dr. James Nininger, Visiting Fellow at the Centre. The project examined the individual and organizational challenges in facilitating this transition. The impetus for this study began as Dr. Nininger was approaching retirement as Chief Executive Officer of the Conference Board of Canada. The study resulted in over 100 interviews with senior executives in both the private and public sectors.

Part of the focus is on the retiring executives themselves, but also on corporate strategies for making the anticipated exodus as smooth as possible.

Topics explored include succession management, corporate knowledge transfer and legacy.
