French as a Second-Language Courses

Basic Training

The Programme de base du français au travail (PBFT). The core Program of French at Work is for the beginner (A), intermediate (B) and advanced (C) levels.

Beginner and Intermediate Levels

The PBFT, Levels A and B, will help you to reach a level of competence sufficient to handle every day work situations in French.

The PBFT consists of:
  • 15 books containing approximately fifty training objectives
  • 3 series for self-training in reading, listening, and writing
  • The Amélioration de la prononciation collection (phonetics)

A three weeks second-language evaluation preparation session is added to the basic program.

Advanced Level

Programme de français langue seconde - Niveau C (PFL2 - C)
(French as a Second Language Program - Level C)

This program provides students with the skills needed to interact comfortably in French in various complicated work-related situations.

The program is made up of the following:

  • a user guide;
  • four modules;
  • a glossary;
  • three reference lists;
  • 13 posters (contents of the reference lists);
  • a DVD.

A three-week preparation session for Second Language Evaluation (SLE) testing is also included in the program.

Programme EX – Formation à l'intention du Groupe de la direction
(Program for The Executive Group (EX))

This advanced language training program is specifically for senior managers, at the EX level (or equivalent). The program is based on the following four main professional management tasks:

  • planning
  • organizing
  • directing
  • evaluating

This program is spread over four sessions. A second-language evaluation preparation session completes the program.

Prerequisite: a valid Level B

There are varied course types: continuous, cyclical. Courses are located in downtown Ottawa (L'Esplanade Laurier) or, by special arrangement, in departments.

Programme pour la gestion intermédiaire et la supervision (PGIS)
(Program for Middle Managers and Supervisors)

This course is specifically designed for those aiming for an advanced level and needing to perform middle management and supervisory functions in French. The PGIS combines language training with professional development and focuses on the following functions:

  • planning
  • organizing
  • directing
  • evaluating

The PGIS is spread over 6 sessions to which a second-language evaluation preparation session is added.

Specific Skills Training

This training is available in the regions only.

CLIC
This one-week immersion course has a cultural and linguistic component. It allows for integration into the Francophone community.
Communication avec les médias
(Communication with the media)
This course will help you to develop fluency in speaking, and to communicate well in French with the media.
Communication orale
(Spoken Communication)
This course will help you to develop fluency in speaking, and to communicate well in French in social and professional situations.
Cours maison
(In-House Course)
This customized course is tailored to specific needs and interests.
Grammaire communicative de base
(Basic Grammar for Communication)
This course is offered at the beginner and intermediate levels to help you understand the basic rules of French grammar and to enable you to apply them correctly in various written and oral communication situations.
Interaction orale
(Speaking)
This course will enable you to develop competence in oral interaction at three levels: beginner, intermediate or advanced. It is designed for those who need to pass the federal Oral Interaction Evaluation Test.
Interaction orale par téléphone
(Telephone conversation)
This course is offered in this format to make up for distance and time constraints.
Le français, votre langue maternelle
(French as a First Language)
This course is for Francophones or for Anglophones with advanced French language skills who wish to perfect their written and oral expression in French.
Lire et écrire en français
(Reading and Writing in French)
This course will give you training and practice in reading, writing, or both, at the beginner, intermediate or advanced level.
Maintien de l'acquis
(Proficiency Maintenance)
This course will allow you to practice the target language in context and update your knowledge.
Perfectionnement de la prononciation
(Polishing Your Pronunciation)
Offered at both the intermediate and advanced levels, this course approaches pronunciation from three angles: phonology, pronunciation techniques and learning strategies.
Pour mieux rédiger en français
(Writing Better French)
This course will help you to write clear and effective memos, letters and notices in French.
Préparation à l'évaluation de la langue seconde (ELS)
(Preparation for a Language Proficiency Test (SLE))
This course was designed for students preparing for a proficiency exam. It offers the training and practice needed to improve oral interaction skills, reading and writing.
Rattrapage
(Refresher)
This course will help you to improve your overall language performance and your ability to communicate in various work-related situations.
Réception téléphonique 1 et 2
(Answering the Telephone 1 and 2)
This course will help you answer both routine and more challenging phone calls politely and in a manner appropriate to your particular work situation.
