Commissioner of Competition Elected New Chairperson of the
International Competition Network

Ottawa, October 27, 2006 – Commissioner of Competition Sheridan Scott has been elected as the new Chairperson of the International Competition Network (ICN), effective February 2007. Commissioner Scott will succeed the President of Germany’s Bundeskartellamt, Dr. Ulf Böge.

The ICN contributes significantly to promoting enforcement convergence and cooperation among competition authorities through a number of practical projects undertaken by member organizations. Commissioner Scott, currently a Vice-chair of the ICN’s Steering Group, is committed to continue the efforts of her predecessors to ensure that the ICN provides a practical and efficient forum for the sharing of best practices and promotion of effective competition law enforcement around the world.

The Bureau was a key player in the creation of the ICN in October 2001 with competition agencies from 13 other jurisdictions around the world. It now includes almost 100 member agencies from over 85 jurisdictions. The aim of the ICN is to intensify cooperation between competition authorities in the globalized world. The ICN is a project-oriented and consensus-based organization, with member agencies from developed and transition economies.

Further information is available on the ICN website.

The Competition Bureau is an independent law enforcement agency that promotes and maintains fair competition so that all Canadians can benefit from competitive prices, product choice and quality services. It oversees the application of the Competition Act, the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act, the Textile Labelling Act and the Precious Metals Marking Act.
