Canada's public pensions are internationally recognized as among the best in the world. And the Government of Canada's commitment to improving the lives of seniors goes well beyond public pensions. Canada offers seniors a wealth of programs and services designed to enhance their quality of life.

What is an NR4 or NR4-OAS slip?

These are tax slips that you get if you receive CPP and/or OAS benefits while living outside Canada. You must include these slips when filing your Canadian income tax return. They are also useful for calculating your income if you have to report these pensions as part of a tax return in another country.

If you lived in Canada at any time during the past year, you may also receive a T4 slip.

International benefits

If you live in a country that has a social security agreement with Canada, you may be eligible for benefits from that country. To find out, contact HRDC.

Call 1 800 277-9914 (TTY: 1 800 255-4786 or go to www.hrdc-drhc.gc.ca/isp/ibfa/intlben.shtml From outside Canada or the U.S., call 1 613 957-1954 or write to International Operations, Income Security Programs, Human Resources Development Canada, Ottawa, ON K1A 0L4 Canada.

Be sure to tell us

  • if you move - we'll need your new address.
  • if a spouse/common-law partner, family member or friend who receives an OAS or CPP benefit dies.
  • if a child for whom you receive a CPP benefit is no longer in your care.

Did you know?

  • If you paid into the Canada Pension Plan, you can get a retirement pension as early as the age of 60, no matter where you live.
  • The following provisions may help to increase your CPP benefits:
    • You can share your pension with your spouse/common-law partner (this may result in income tax savings).
    • Widowed spouses/common-law partners and surviving children can get survivor benefits.
    • Periods of low income are left out of the benefit calculation if that will increase your CPP benefit.
