Competition Commissioner Launches Immediate Examination of Retail Gasoline Prices Under the Competition Act

OTTAWA, July 22, 1999 -- The Competition Bureau announced today that there is an examination underway to determine if any anti-competitive activity amongst companies selling retail gasoline at the pumps caused the apparent rise in gas prices paid by consumers across Canada yesterday.

In response to a flood of calls made to the Bureau from consumers and businesses about price increases at gas pumps in a number of markets across the country, the Bureau is contacting representatives of the petroleum industry as well as other informed sources in order to collect information about the events leading up to the recent price increases.

"People believe that gas prices increased by too much or occurred too much in unison for the activity to be a coincidence," said Konrad von Finckenstein, Commissioner of Competition. "My job is to acquire the facts necessary to establish whether this pattern of behaviour raises issues under the Competition Act. If I obtain evidence of conduct contrary to the provisions of the Act, I will take the appropriate action."

Anyone who has information that may lead to the laying of criminal charges may contact the Bureau's Information Centre.
