Pesticide Risk Reduction and Minor Use Programs

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC)

Last Verified: 2006-09-25

U nder the Pesticide Risk Reduction program, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) is working with provincial and industry partners to gather information on priority crops to identify gaps in the range of pest management products available. It also supports research to develop commodity-specific risk-reduction strategies.

Minor Use Programs' major activities centre on conducting field trials and generating data to support registration of minor use pesticides. AAFC works closely with grower groups and pesticide companies to identify and prioritize major pest management problems.

Eligibility Criteria

The research community and grower organizations are invited to respond to requests for proposals (RFPs) addressing particular pest management issues.

There is no funding available to producers. AAFC funding totals $58.5 million over 6 years, 2003-04 to 2007-08.

Eligible Activities

The Pesticide Risk Reduction program provides financial support for the implementation of commodity-specific risk reduction strategies.

Summary

Objective
The Pesticide Risk Reduction (PRR) Program will help reduce the risks to the environment from pesticides used in agriculture, contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment and result in safer food for consumers. The Minor Use Program (MUP) will provide benefits to Canadian producers, the environment and consumers by focusing on providing access to new pest management tools.

Expected Results
The PRR Program will develop and implement strategies to reduce pesticide risks, conduct research into improving methods for pest control and develop alternative approaches to pest management. MUP will assist producers in accessing more environmentally friendly and more-efficient pest management technologies, which will increase their competitiveness in global markets.

Delivery
In some provinces, delivery will be through a third party, while in other cases, provinces will deliver on behalf of AAFC. In the Prairie Provinces, AAFC will be responsible for administering and delivering incentive funds. Some variation will exist between delivery of EFP and BMP programming within individual provinces. Please see the Web site for details.
