NRC Institute for Biological Sciences (NRC-IBS)

National Research Council Canada (NRC)

Last Verified: 2006-04-08

The NRC Institute for Biological Sciences (NRC-IBS) does innovative research in the application of neuro-and glycosciences to reduce the impact of age-related and infectious diseases. Research programs are carried out with partners in industry, universities, hospitals and other R&D organizations.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Canadian industry;
  • universities;
  • hospitals;
  • research centers.

Summary

The Institute for Biological Sciences is composed of two major research programs - Neurobiology and Immunochemistry - and facilities for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectrometry, bacterial culture and confocal microscopy.

Neurobiology
The Neurobiology Program carries out fundamental and applied research in neuronal and non-neuronal cell function in relation to neurodegenerative diseases. This is achieved by combining a spectrum of models, ranging from cell to patient, and a variety of techniques spanning electrophysiology, genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics. The Program comprises more than 70 scientists with expertise in brain cell physiology, molecular biology and biochemistry, and is structured into five groups: Cerebrovascular Research, Neurogenomics, Neurogenesis and Brain Repair, Molecular Signaling, and Neurophysiology.

Immunochemistry
The Immunochemistry Program carries out molecular-level research of strategic importance on infectious diseases and cancer. Genomics and proteomics research is playing a central role in program activities and is leading to new targets for therapeutic intervention and vaccine design. The Immunochemistry Program brings together a multidisciplinary team of about 110 scientists and technicians with expertise ranging from biophysics to models of disease pathogenesis. The program structure comprises seven distinct groups: Bioanalysis, Carbohydrate-Protein Systems, Glycobiology, Vaccine Design, Infection and Immunity, Molecular Pathogenesis, and Pathogen Genomics.

How to collaborate with NRC-IBS
NRC-IBS is working with partners from industry, universities, hospitals, and research centers and plays an active role in one of Canada's foremost Centers of Excellence Network: the Canadian Bacterial Disease Network.

The Business Relations Office is responsible for making the various types of business arrangements with its partners, whether these are collaborative agreements, research contracts or research service agreements. The Business Relations Offices also liaise with NRC corporate offices in handling the patenting, licensing and marketing of NRC-IBS technologies and skills.
