NRC Institute for National Measurement Standards (NRC-INMS)

National Research Council Canada (NRC)

Last Verified: 2006-03-09

The main role of the NRC Institute for National Measurement Standards (NRC-INMS) is to provide the primary centre of reference in Canada for the accuracy, validity, and traceability of physical and chemical measurements. As Canada's National Metrology Institute, it is the foundation of Canada's national measurement system and is responsible for the realization and dissemination of primary measurement standards. These standards support the metrological needs of Canadian industry and help reduce measurement-related barriers to world trade.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Canadian industry;
  • universities;
  • government.

Summary

The Institute has eight fields of research with eleven specialized programs in both physical and chemical metrology. The physical metrology programs develop, maintain, improve, and disseminate standards for the base quantities of mass, length, time, electricity, temperature, and luminous intensity as well as a number of derived measurement standards. The chemical metrology program develops and maintains world-class capabilities in selected areas of organic and inorganic trace analysis, and provides certified reference materials.

Traceability of all measurements in Canada to the International System of Units (SI) through these standards provides the basis for fair trade, development in science and technology, the achievement of product quality, and demonstration of conformance to international standards such as ISO 9000.

Other kinds of services available
The calibration services provided by NRC-INMS are designed to help manufacturers and users of precision instruments achieve the highest possible levels of measurement quality and productivity. They establish a direct link between a client's precision equipment or transfer standards and the SI through Canada's national measurement standards. These services are available to both public and private organizations and individuals.

The Calibration Laboratory Assessment Service (CLAS) is a national program that assesses the quality systems and technical competence of public and private sector calibration laboratories seeking accreditation by the Standards Council of Canada to ISO/IEC 17025. Accredited calibration laboratories become members of the Canadian Calibration Network, able to offer their clients calibration services with verified traceability to national and international measurement standards.
