Summary

The Institute's research program addresses many issues that affect the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the built environment: the performance of materials and systems, civil infrastructure, productivity of the workplace and fire safety. In partnership with industry, NRC-IRC is currently increasing its focus on major emerging research issues such as the environment, indoor health, infrastructure, rehabilitation and the need for integrated decision-making tools.

What services are available?
The Institute provides logistic and technical support for the production of the Canadian model construction codes that serve as the basis for almost all building regulations across the country. In partnership with industry, NRC-IRC also operates the Canadian Construction Materials Centre, an expert evaluation service that provides, with the full cooperation of the provinces, a fast track to the market place for innovative products.

In close cooperation with the industry's own communication networks, the Institute operates an extensive delivery program consisting of direct services for technical information, publications and seminars to ensure that industry has access to information about new and existing technologies and construction science. It also acts as a construction technology and information resource base for NRC's Industrial Research Assistance Program (Note: see document NRC Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP)).

Furthermore, during the course of NRC-IRC’s research activities, intellectual property protection is sought where commercialization opportunities are anticipated. Licensing agreements for commercialization are available to organizations with capabilities to transform the patented inventions or intellectual property into viable commercial opportunities.
