The NRC National Institute of Nanotechnology (NRC-NINT) is an integrated, multidisciplinary institution involving researchers in physics, chemistry, engineering, biology, informatics, pharmacy and medicine.

The NRC-NINT's upcoming 15 000 square-metre research and industry partnership/incubation facility is designed to accommodate 150 permanent jobs in research; guest workers from industry and universities; and training opportunities for graduate and post-doctoral researchers.

Summary

Established in 2001, the NRC-NINT is funded and operated jointly by the National Research Council (NRC), the Province of Alberta and the University of Alberta and is located on the University of Alberta campus in Edmonton.

Role and Mission
The NRC-NINT has a national mandate to conduct molecular and nano-scale technology research, development and commercialization. The Institute focuses on conducting research and creating nanotechnology applicable to:

  • advanced materials;
  • information and computing technology;
  • energy; 
  • life sciences and medicine.

The NRC-NINT's goals are to:

  • establish Edmonton (and Alberta) as an international centre for nanotechnology research within three years; and
  • anchor a national nanotechnology R&D infrastructure available to researchers across the country.
