National Occupational Classification and the Career Handbook

Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC)

Last Verified: 2004-05-13

The National Occupational Classification (NOC 2001) is a system for describing the occupations of Canadians. It gives statisticians, labour market analysts, career counsellors, employers and individual job seekers a standardized way of describing and understanding the nature of work. The system includes a series of publications that help these people to organize and use statistics and other labour market facts.

The Career Handbook is the counselling component of the National Occupational Classification system. It provides global ratings assigned to occupations to further define skills, worker characteristics and other indicators related to occupations that are important for career exploration and informed career decision-making.

Summary

The National Occupational Classification (NOC 2001) contains the classification structure and descriptions of 520 occupational unit groups that constitute the Canadian labour market. A poster-size NOC matrix (which graphically illustrates the entire classification), an index of over 30,000 occupational titles and a CD-ROM are also included in the package.

The updated Career Handbook provides 923 occupational profiles for counselling based on NOC 2001 occupations and maintains the original descriptor scales, factors and presentation format. It includes information on aptitudes, interests, involvement with data/people/things, physical activities, environmental conditions, education/training indicators, career progression and work settings.
