The fatalities reported here represent worker deaths that occurred in the year indicated and that have been compensated by WorkSafeBC (the Workers’ Compensation Board of B.C.). Accepted fatality claims include both injury fatalities and work-related disease fatalities. Currently, there are 87 deaths that have occurred in 2007 and have been compensated.

Fatality information may be updated as a result of changes and appeals. The information presented here is not official data (which is based on the year in which compensation began rather than the year the fatality occurred). Official data are provided in the Annual Report of WorkSafeBC.

A construction worker was fatally crushed when a tilt-up concrete perimeter wall fell over. The wall, which was 6 inches thick, 9.5 feet high, and 30 feet long, fell over when it was struck by the bucket of a stationary tractor.

A fisherman was working alone on a gillnet fishing boat that did not have guardrails or a lifeline. He fell into the water. The fishing boat was discovered adrift with no one on board. Later, the fisherman's body was found in the water.

Two workers were using a rubber-tired log loader to prepare the blade assembly (gravel spread cat) of a track-type tractor before attaching the blade to the tractor's "C" frame. One of the log loader's forks was used to prop up the blade. As the tractor operator attempted to manually position one of the blade's swing arms, the blade assembly shifted, causing the swing arm to rotate, striking the operator and pinning him to the ground.

Three workers left a logging camp in a crew boat to check on a boomman running a sidewinder boat in from another location. The weather was growing more severe, with visibility decreasing. After the boomman had been transferred into the crew boat, the workers attempted to return to camp but became lost/disoriented. The boat struck the shore, killing one worker and injuring the other three.

When the paste hardened, it was power sanded, and the air in the shop was then filled with asbestos dust. The dangers of asbestos were not well known in the early years, so personal protective equipment was not used.
