Digest of Benefit Entitlement Principles - Chapter 14
CHAPTER 14
TEACHERS
Claimants engaged in the occupation of teaching, like any other claimants, must prove they are capable of and available for work and unable to obtain suitable employment for any working day of a benefit period. Teachers will not be automatically disentitled from benefits during the non-teaching period based on the fact that they are available for a teaching position only.
However, teachers need to demonstrate that, during the non-teaching period, they are willing and able to accept immediately any offer of suitable employment and that no restrictions exist that would limit their employment opportunities1.
The concept of a reasonable period of time to find teaching employment will not be applied during the non-teaching periods2. The availability of the claimant must be supported by actions and evidence as would be required of any claimant. A teacher must, during the non-teaching periods, seek work in other occupations in which there is employment opportunities3 if there are little or no teaching opportunities during the non-teaching period.
