All Businesses operating in the Northwest Territories must register and attach a copy of the Certificate of Compliance to the Business License application.  You must register with a Worker's Compensation Office within 10 days of commencing business operations.

Eligibility Criteria

All employers who carry on business in the Northwest Territories.

Summary

All employers who carry on business in the Northwest Territories, even temporarily, must register with the Workers' Compensation Board within 10 days of commencing operations.

You require Workers' Compensation Board registration in order to obtain a business licence.

Even if you do not employ workers, you still require to register with the Workers' Compensation Board.

If your business is based outside of the Northwest Territories and you employ workers or carry on business in the Northwest Territories you must register with the Workers' Compensation Board regardless of your home jurisdiction.

For coverage to be extended to a worker outside the Northwest Territories, the following criteria must be met:

  • your worker must be a resident, or regularly work in the Northwest Territories;
  • the nature of employment must require that it be performed in and out of the Northwest Territories and continue on the workers' return;
  • your worker cannot be hired solely for the job outside of the Northwest Territories; and
  • employment outside of the Northwest Territories cannot exceed 6 months.

    For coverage to continue beyond the initial 6 months, you must apply to the Workers' Compensation Board and be granted an extension for each subsequent 6 month period.

    No industries are exempt from Workers' Compensation Board registration.

    You will need to provide details of your business operation, together with an estimate of your assessable payroll for the upcoming calendar year.  With this information, the Workers' Compensation Board will establish an account and you will be issued a notice of assessment.
