Summer Temporary Employment Program (STEP)

The Summer Temporary Employment Program (STEP) was developed by Alberta Human Resources and Employment and community partners to help Albertans who would benefit from temporary employment during the spring and summer months - typically post-secondary students and high school students.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible employers include registered not-for-profit organizations, municipal governments, First Nations and Métis Settlements, publicly funded post- secondary institutions, regional health authorities and school divisions. (Note: municipalities, post-secondary institutions, regional health authorities and school divisions are each allocated a maximum funding amount. All other organizations' applications are reviewed on an individual basis.)

Employees must be at least 16 years of age, unemployed and legally entitled to work in Canada.

STEP is also involved in the following programs:

  • Alberta Future Leaders
  • Quebec / Alberta Student Employment Exchange Program
  • Ooskipukwa, Indian Management Assistance Program
  • RCMP Summer Student Employment Program

Quebec / Alberta Student Employment Exchange Program - Employers are Provincial Government departments. Participants must be residents of the province, registered as full-time students at a university in the province having completed their first year, legally entitled to work in Canada and have a minimum working knowledge of the French language.

Summary

Reimbursement:  - Community Based Element - Wage support of $4.50 per hour plus an additional 10% to cover the employer's share of benefits costs.
