Business License Application -- Settlement Status

Department of Municipal and Community Affairs

If you intend to establish a business in a community with settlement status or you wish to operate outside a community but within the Northwest Territories then you must receive a business license from the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs.

Eligibility Criteria

All business start-ups.

Summary

You require a valid Workers' Compensation Board Certificate of Compliance in order to licence a company.

Fee Schedule


Type 1
Resident -- one who operates a business in the Northwest Territories for 8 months or more each year -- $50        

Type 2
Non-resident -- one who operates a business in the Northwest Territories for less than 8 months each year -- $200

Type 3
 Second Hand Dealers and Pawnbroker -- $25

Communities Without Business Licence By-Laws

Colville Lake (2), Detah (1), Enterprise (2), Fort Good Hope (3), Fort Providence (3), Fort Resolution (2), Hay River Reserve (1), Jean Marie River (1), Kakisa (1), Lutsel'Ke K'e (1), Nahanni Butte (1), Paulatuk (3), Rae Lakes (1), Reliance, Snare Lake (1), Trout Lake (1), Tsiigehtchic (3), Wrigley (1).

(1) First nation communities do not have the ability to enact by-laws respecting business licences.
(2) Settlement corporations do not have the ability to enact by-laws respecting business licences.
(3) Charter communities and hamlets do not envision taking on this responsibility at this time.
