The main role of NTI's Business Development Department is to ensure that Article 24 of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement is implemented by the Government of Nunavut and the Federal Government of Canada.
Article 24 relates to government contracts. Its purpose is to help Inuit firms compete for contracts in Nunavut.
The Policy Objective of Article 24 is detailed in paragraph 24.3.6:
Procurement policies and implementing measures shall reflect, to the extent possible, the following objective:

Increased participation by Inuit firms in business opportunities in the Nunavut Settlement Area's economy

Improve capacity of Inuit firms to compete for government contracts; and

Employment of Inuit at the representative level in the Nunavut Settlement Area work force
To ensure this objective is met, NTI's Business Development Department is responsible for maintaining the Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated Inuit Firm Registry. The registry is the only authorized listing of Inuit firms in Nunavut.
Eligibility Criteria
In order to be considerd "Inuit owned" and to be included in the Inuit Firm Registry , a company needs to be at least 51% owned by a beneficiary of the Nunavut Land Claim Agreement.
Summary
The Inuit Firm Registry is distributed at least once a month to contracting authorities within the Government of Nunavut and Federal Government departments, so that they are aware of which firms in Nunavut are considered Inuit-owned.
To register as an Inuit Firm, a sole proprietor, partnership or company can request an Inuit Firm Registry application from the Iqaluit office of Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.
