This program provides disabled entrepreneurs in Rural Manitoba, who are unable to obtain financing from a traditional financial institution, access to business loans up to $125,000.  The terms of the loans are designed to be patient and flexible, specifically tailored to address each individual entrepreneur's needs and repayable at competitive rates.   The funds can be used for starting or expanding a business; purchasing and applying new technology to a business; upgrading facilities and equipment; developing marketing and promotions materials; and establishing working capital for anticipated sales increases.  Business services are also provided such as helping to develop customized business plans; mentoring and counselling services; training in business development; one-on-one assistance; help identifying needs for specialized equipment and assistance acquiring it and access to capital.

Provides business loans of up to $75,000 to help Winnipeg entrepreneurs with disabilities start or expand their own business.  Funds may be used to purchase or apply new technology; upgrade facilities and equipment; develop marketing and promotional activities; and establish working capital.  Individuals wishing to qualify for a loan must live in Winnipeg and have a disability.  Independent Living Resource Centre provides access to small business management training; assistance in preparing business plans; peer support and networking; and one-on-one consulting services.

To be eligible, you must be a permanent Canadian citizen or have lived in Canada for at least two years as a permanent resident and you must be enrolled in your first undergraduate degree program.  All disciplines are eligible.

Helps to generate innovative activities which help persons with disabilities prepare for, obtain and keep employment or self-employment.  To be eligible, a participant must self-identify as having a disability; be unemployed; be legally entitled to work in Canada; and be in need of assistance to prepare for, find, or become employed or self-employed.  Participants must not be eligible for assistance under the Employment Benefits provided by the Canada Employment Insurance Commission under Part II of the Employment Insurance Act or similar provincial or territorial programs that are subject to agreements with provinces, territories or organizations funded through Section 63 of the Employment Insurance Act.

Rebate for Specially-Equipped Vehicles for Persons with Disabilities

This bulletin explains the rebate of the 6% GST, the 8% provincial component of the HST or the 14% HST that may be claimed on specially-equipped motor vehicles (referred to below as qualifying motor vehicles) that are used by, or to transport, individuals using wheelchairs, and vehicles equipped with auxiliary driving controls for individuals with disabilities. The rebate applies to new vehicles and used vehicles that have not been used since being specially equipped, and to first leases of qualifying motor vehicles, including the purchase of the vehicle by the first lessee upon the exercise of an option under that lease.

Assists low-income individuals or groups to establish small businesses by providing business planning assistance, training, and after-care services through its Build-A-Business Program (BAB). Other programs available through SEED include: Asset Building Programs, Money Management Training, Community and Worker Ownership Program (CWOP), Community Economic Development (CED) Technical Assistance and Research and Development. SEED's BAB & CWOP Programs also provide access to Business Loans and to the Enhanced Self Employment Program for individuals who are on income assistance. All services are offered free of charge.

Provides unemployed employment insurance eligible individuals with financial support, planning assistance and mentoring while they get their business up and running.  The maximum duration of support is 78 weeks for clients with a disability that will affect their ability to make the business sustainable in one year.

An internship program specifically designed for college and high school graduates with disabilities.  Through 6, 9 or 12-month internships, graduates with disabilities obtain work experience in their field at many Canadian organizations and industries.  Students must be a graduate with a disability; have no career related work experience, be eligible to work in Canada; and have not previously been a Career Edge or Ability Edge intern. As a Career Edge Intern with Ability Edge, you gain practical work experience in your career of choice; are mentored by a coach, can network with people in your field; receive support with accommodation needs; receive a stipend of $1667/month and receive job counselling after the internship.

Our library contains over 13,000 business and trade publications to help you develop your business plan, perform market research or source suppliers. Our experienced staff can help you find the business information you need. We also offer materials specifically for persons with disabilities such as audio cassettes with Braille identifying labels. Our collection includes Entrepreneurship and Persons with Disabilities (Video); No More Job Interviews!: Self-Employment Strategies for People with Disabilities; Unlikely Entrepreneurs: A Business Start Up Guide for People with Chronic Health Conditions; and How to Set Up Your Own Small Business (available in large print and Braille).

The C/MBSC library is designed to serve individuals with disabilities. The library and washrooms are wheelchair accessible and our public access computers have an assortment of assistive equipment (both hardware and software) for various levels of physical ability.

Volunteers are taught how to complete basic tax returns for low-income individuals with simple tax situations.  They in turn assist people to fill out their tax returns.  Services are free of charge.

A book of success stories about people with disabilities who have integrated into the entrepreneurial workforce.  The book profiles 12 people, with a variety of disabilities, who have achieved success in business.  The project showcases the contribution these individuals have made to the Canadian economy and provides advice to businesses serving entrepreneurs with disabilities as well as to potential entrepreneurs.  It was designed for entrepreneurs with disabilities as well as their suppliers, partners and the general public.  This publication is available in print format as well as in the following alternative formats: audio cassette, Braille, and diskette.  The cost is $10.00 and this includes shipping and handling.
