Summary
Co-operatives incorporated under the Co-operative Associations Act of New Brunswick are based in the province of New Brunswick. Co-operatives are a form of business organized and controlled by its members to meet their needs. Over one hundred active co-operatives are regulated under the Act. These New Brunswick co-operatives are carrying on business in a variety of sectors including marketing or processing of agriculture, fishery and forestry products; supply of goods and services including groceries, housing, day care, leisure and cultural activities, etc. Many workers co-operatives of New Brunswick are active in forestry while others are active in retail, food processing, vehicle maintenance, etc.
Under the Act, a co-operative may be incorporated by any three or more persons of the age of majority. Any three or more associations incorporated under the Act may also incorporate a co-operative.
Under the Act, a co-operative can be incorporated with or without capital divided into shares. In a co-operatives without share capital, also termed "co-operatives limited by membership", members have to pay membership fees as opposed to paying shares.
Each member has only one vote. Members receive part of the surplus in proportion to the volume of business they have done with or through their co-operative.
