CA Number Registration and Database

Industry Canada (IC)

Last Verified: 2006-01-24

Act: Textile Labelling Act, R.S.C. 1985, c. T-10
Regulation: Textile Labelling and Advertising Regulations, C.R.C., Vol. XVIII, c. 1551, p. 13759, as amended

To Whom Does This Apply?

Only Canadian textile retailers, wholesalers, manufacturers and importers can apply for a CA Number.

Summary

A CA Number is a five-digit identification number preceded by the letters "CA". Companies use this number to meet provisions of the Textile Labelling Act that require prescribed consumer textile articles to be labelled with the identity of the person by or for whom the textile articles were made.

This provision of the Act can be satisfied by identifying on the labels attached to the clothing or other textile articles, either:

  • the full name and postal address of the dealer, or
  • in the case of a Canadian dealer, a CA number.

Application for a CA Identification Number

  • Each application must be accompanied by a fee of one hundred dollars ($100). All cheques or money orders must be made payable to the Receiver General for Canada.
  • Completed applications and accompanying payments may be taken to most Competition Bureau offices for immediate assignment of an Identification Number or mailed to the address identified on the application.
  • Applications may also be submitted electronically through the Competition Bureau's Web site.

Failure to complete the application accurately may delay processing and the assignment of an Identification Number.

The Competition Bureau maintains a database of all CA identification numbers with a corresponding business name and address. The public may access information from this database by contacting the Competition Bureau's Information Centre, or by visiting the Bureau's Web site.

The Competition Bureau is an independent law enforcement agency that ensures all Canadians enjoy the benefits of a competitive economy. The Bureau oversees the application of the Competition Act, the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act, the Textile Labelling Act, and the Precious Metals Marking Act.
