An Analysis of the Peterborough Area Labour Market

An overview of the Peterborough Area which includes the Peterborough/Haliburton, Cobourg and City of Kawartha Lakes HRCC areas.

The area’s labour market performance weakened for the second consecutive quarter. Declines occurred in both the labour force (-9,600) and in employment levels (-11,600). Job losses occurred in both full-time and part-time work with the majority of lossess occurring in full-time. The unemployment rate increased to 5.6% compared to 4.3% last quarter

All major indicators compared unfavourably to last year’s. Employment levels were lower by 13,700, the labour force decreased by 13,000, and the unemployment rate was lower by 0.8 %. The unemployment rate remains lower than both the provincial and national averages.

Highlights:

  • Devastating flood strikes Peterborough in midst of tourism season. Initial estimates of damage to homes and businesses pegged at $85 million.
  • Multi Channel Communication Inc. (MCCI) hired 350 employees and plans to hire 100 more.
  • Siemens’ Milltronics Process Instruments Inc. transferring production lines to Peterborough plant.
  • Leslie M. Frost Natural Resources Centre in Haliburton closed, laying off 31 workers.
  • More health care professionals relocated to Kawartha area.
  • Labour market performance slowed for second straight quarter. Employment posted largest third-quarter drop on record, mainly affecting full-time work.
  • Employment Insurance claims increased marginally quarter-over-quarter. Claims rose by 10% year-over-year.
  • Job vacancies grew by 4% from last quarter; and by nearly 60% from the same time a year ago.
