Robert Thibault was first elected to the House of Commons as the Member of Parliament for West Nova in November 2000. He went to Ottawa committed to having a strong voice within government to fight for the values, beliefs and rights of those living in West Nova, and was re-elected in June 2004.

On January 9, 2001, Mr. Thibault was appointed Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. His appointment marked the first time in decades that Southwest Nova Scotia had a voice at the federal Cabinet table.

Mr. Thibault served as Minister of State until January 15, 2002 when he became Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, a position he held until December 11, 2003. He became the first Nova Scotian in sixty-five years to hold the fisheries portfolio. He also served as the Regional Minister for Nova Scotia from January 2001 until December 2003.

In July 2004, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health.
Community involvement has always been an important part of Mr. Thibault’s life. He served as Chair of the Board of Governors of l’Université Sainte-Anne, and presided over a number of organizations including the Association of Municipal Administrators, the Acadian Federation of Nova Scotia and the Clare Chamber of Commerce.

Robert and his wife Janice Boudreau live in Concession, Nova Scotia.
