Protecting the Environment
CNSC regulations are designed to protect the environment from the use of nuclear energy and materials. Some projects that are regulated by the CNSC also require an environmental assessment under the Canadian Environmental Assessment (CEA) Act. The CEA Act applies to all Government of Canada departments and agencies.
The CEA Act defines where and when an environmental
assessment is required. One of the underlying principles of the CEA Act,
and the CNSC licensing process, is that the public be given ample opportunity
to participate. Public involvement strengthens the quality and credibility of
such assessments. The CNSC maintains up-to-date information about all of its
current environmental assessments.
The CNSC also monitors the environmental performance and compliance of its licensees to ensure that their activities are consistent with CNSC licence conditions and Canada's international obligations.
