Commission meetings are a forum for informing the Commission Members on a
range of topics related to the nuclear regulatory process and, where applicable,
for seeking Commission decisions on matters of special or general application.
Major facility-specific licensing decisions are not addressed at Commission
meetings, but rather at public hearings. For information on public hearings see
Public Commission Hearings.
Typically, a Commission meeting will include CNSC staff presentations and
discussions by the Members on significant development reports, facility or
industry sector developments or status reports, and mid-term licensee
performance reports. The Commission may also be called upon at meetings to make
decisions on proposed new or modified regulations, or to approve certain
regulatory policies and guidance documents, which generally apply to the
regulated community. At its meetings, the Commission may also deal with other
administrative or information matters which assist the Commission in fulfilling
its mandate.
Commission meetings are normally open to the public but may also be held
“in-camera” (closed session) in whole or in part. For example, certain protected
information may not be discussed in a public forum.
The CNSC By-laws outline the conduct of Commission meetings.
During a public meeting, simultaneous interpretation in one or the other of
Canada’s official languages is provided when necessary. Verbatim transcripts are
produced and published on the CNSC Web site the week following the meeting. The
meeting minutes are approved at the next Commission meeting and published
afterwards.
