Project Description

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has received notice from the Iter International Fusion Energy Institute of its intent to apply for a site construction licence to construct the Iter International Fusion Energy Facility.

Iter was initiated as an international project in 1985, and Canada, France and Japan have all indicated their interest in hosting the project. The Iter Institute is a not-for-profit corporation created to become the owner, operator and licensee if the Iter facility is to be built in Canada.

Before the Commission makes its decision on the Iter International Fusion Energy Institute's application for a site licence, an environmental assessment must be completed in compliance with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. The purpose of an environmental assessment is to identify the possible environmental effects of a proposed project, and to determine whether these effects can be mitigated before the project is allowed to proceed.

The Iter facility construction and operation project would consist of the following elements:

  • an 8-10 year construction phase; and
  • a four-year commissioning and initial operation phase.

A decision on the preferred site to construct the Iter facility would not likely be made before late 2002 or early 2003.
