REQUEST FOR PUBLIC COMMENT
Draft Environmental Assessment Screening Report
Point Lepreau Solid Radioactive Waste Management Facility

Staff of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) invites public comment on the draft environmental assessment Screening Report for the proposed modifications and additions to the Solid Radioactive Waste Management Facility (SRWMF) at Point Lepreau, New Brunswick.

New Brunswick Power submitted a request to the CNSC for authorization to modify the currently licensed waste management facility, for the purpose of managing additional waste arising from potential refurbishment activities at the Point Lepreau Generating Station. The environmental assessment is being conducted pursuant to the requirements of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. For further information on this environmental assessment, please see the Project Description.

The draft Screening Report is based on an Environmental Assessment Study Report prepared by New Brunswick Power in response to Environmental Assessment Guidelines approved by the CNSC in June 2002.

The proposal also required registration pursuant to the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulation of the New Brunswick Clean Environment Act. The CNSC and the New Brunswick Department of Environment and Local Government (NBDELG) agreed that the federal and provincial environmental assessment processes would be completed in a harmonized and co-operative manner.

The public comment period on the draft Screening Report ends on April 17, 2003. CNSC staff, in consultation with NBDELG staff, will review comments received and then finalize the Screening Report, which will be sent to the Commission for decision after a public hearing. All comments received regarding the draft Screening Report are public information.
