CNSC Announces Decision on Screening Environmental Assessment for Atomic Energy of Canada Limited’s (AECL) Proposal to Construct and Operate a Shielded Modular Above-Ground Storage Facility at the Chalk River Laboratories

Following a hearing held on April 27, 2006, in Ottawa, Ontario, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) announced today its conclusion that AECL’s proposal to construct and operate a shielded modular above-ground storage facility, taking into account identified mitigation measures, is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.The proposal involves the storage of solid low-level radioactive wastes generated through AECL’s operations and decommissioning activities at the Chalk River Laboratories, as well as wastes from off-site commercial generators.

The Commission’s decision was based on its consideration of a screening environmental assessment of the project that was prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA). Further, with respect to the CEAA, the Commission decided not to refer the project to the federal Minister of the Environment for referral to a review panel or mediator.

The Commission therefore will proceed, under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act, with its consideration of a licence application from AECL for the proposed project.
