Project Description

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has received notice from Mississauga Metals & Alloys Inc (MM&A) of its intent to apply for a Waste Nuclear Substance Licence. The licence would be for the installation of an incinerator in an existing building, and would include the construction of the required facility, the installation of the incinerator and supporting mechanical/electrical and other support systems, and the activity of incinerating waste. The incinerator would be used to burn material received from a variety of global sources. Some of the materials might be contaminated with radionuclides. Incoming mixed waste would be temporarily stored at a second MM&A building and shipped to the incinerator as required during each burn cycle.

Before the Commission makes its decision on MM&A's application, an environmental assessment must be completed in compliance with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. The purpose of an environmental assessment is to identify the possible environmental effects of a proposed project, and to determine whether these effects can be mitigated before the project is allowed to proceed.
