REQUEST FOR PUBLIC COMMENT
Draft Environmental Assessment Scope Document for the Iter Facility

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) invites public comment on the environmental assessment scope document for the proposed construction of the Iter International Fusion Energy Institute facility in Clarington, Ontario. This environmental assessment will be conducted pursuant to the requirements of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.

Interested parties should address their written comments to the CNSC environmental assessment project manager at the address indicated below. The public comment period ends October 19, 2001. The CNSC will review comments and then finalize the draft scope document. All comments received regarding the scope document are considered public.

The Iter Institute has submitted notice to the CNSC of their intention to apply for a licence to construct a research and development facility that demonstrates the feasibility of fusion energy. If licensed, the Iter facility would be designated as a Class 1 A Nuclear Facility under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act.
