Deep Geologic Repository for Low and Intermediate Level Radioactive Wastes

Canadina Environmental Assessment Agency
Public Notice

Availability of $30,000 in Participant Funding for the Comprehensive Study Assessment of the Proposed Deep Geologic Repository for Low and Intermediate Level Radioactive Wastes

The Government of Canada, through the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency), has established a $30,000 participant funding program to assist groups and individuals to take part in the environmental assessment of the proposed Deep Geologic Repository for Low and Intermediate Level Radioactive Wastes in Tiverton, Ontario, east of Lake Huron.

To receive funding, successful applicants must participate in the environmental assessment process of the proposed project. They must also sign a contribution agreement with the Agency. Funding applications received at the Agency by September 27, 2006 will be considered.

Information on the program, including the Participant Funding Program Guide, the application form, and the contribution agreement can be found on the Agency’s Web site.

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) proposes to build and operate a deep geologic repository for the long-term management of low and intermediate-level radioactive waste at the Bruce Nuclear site. The facilities would receive waste currently in storage, as well as that produced from the continued operation of OPG generating stations at Bruce, Pickering and Darlington, Ontario.

This project requires licenses from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s for activities under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act and is subject to the federal environmental assessment process pursuant to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.
