CNSC Issues an Order to SRB Technologies

06-23

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 15, 2006

Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) issued an Order under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act (NSCA) today to SRB Technologies (Canada) Incorporated (SRBT) in relation to the processing and use of tritium at its nuclear substance processing facility located in Pembroke, Ontario.

The Order was issued to prevent further contamination and unreasonable risk to the environment surrounding the facility. The contamination is isolated to the land in the immediate vicinity of the facility. At this time there is no indication of risk to the health or safety of the community or the workers.

Recent scientific evidence led CNSC staff to conclude that the continued operation of SRBT under the current conditions would present an unreasonable risk to the environment. SRBT is required to take all reasonable precautions to protect the environment. In accordance with procedures under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act and Regulations, the Order was issued by a CNSC Designated Officer and has been referred to the Commission for its review.

SRBT is expected to comply with all provisions of its operating licence under the NSCA to maintain the facility in a safe condition.

The CNSC’s mission is to regulate the use of nuclear energy and materials to protect health, safety, security and the environment and to respect Canada’s international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
