CNSC Announces Decision on Renewal of Operating Licence for Canadian Light Source Inc.’s Facility in Saskatchewan

2006-03-30-Decision-CLSI-e.pdfFollowing a public hearing held on March 30, 2006, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) announced today its decision to renew the Particle Accelerator Operating Licence for Canadian Light Source Inc.’s (CLSI) Canadian Light Source (CLS) facility. The CLS facility consists of a 2.9 GeV electron synchrotron that produces synchrotron radiation used for experiments in diverse scientific fields. The facility is located on the campus of the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.The licence is valid until May 31, 2012.

With this decision, the Commission requested that CNSC staff present to the Commission a status report on the commissioning activities and on the performance of the facility over the first half of the licence term. The status report will be presented at a public proceeding of the Commission.

During the public hearing, the Commission considered written submissions and oral presentations from CLSI and CNSC staff. The Commission concluded that CLSI is qualified to operate the facility and that it will make adequate provision for the protection of the environment, the health and safety of persons, and the maintenance of national security and measures required to implement international obligations to which Canada has agreed.
