CNSC announces proposed amendments to Nuclear Security Regulations
03-26
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 27, 2003
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), Canada’s nuclear regulator, today announced that proposed amendments to the Nuclear Security Regulations have been published in the Canada Gazette, Part I. Interested parties are encouraged to comment on the proposed amended regulations by November 24, 2003.
The events of September 11, 2001 caused the CNSC to issue orders requiring licensees to implement specific physical protection measures to strengthen security at their facilities. After holding extensive discussions and consultations with affected licensees, the CNSC is now proposing a number of regulatory amendments which will permanently place into regulations the requirements currently in the orders and licence conditions.
“Stringent regulation of the nuclear industry is necessary to protect Canadians”, said CNSC President and CEO Linda J. Keen. “The proposed amendments strengthen security at nuclear facilities and bring Canada in line with international nuclear security requirements and practices.”
More detailed information on the proposed amendments can be found at www.nuclearsafety.gc.ca/eng/licensees/regulations/NSR_home.cfm.
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission regulates the use of nuclear energy and materials to protect health, safety, security and the environment, and to respect Canada’s international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
