Celebrating Innovations and Fostering a Culture of Quality Improvement in Health Care

Ontario health care providers have shown themselves to be innovators in health care. Their ideas and approaches are contributing to saving lives, improving health outcomes for Ontario patients, and leading to a better performing health care system overall.

Celebrating Innovations

To highlight and support the exchange of this invaluable knowledge, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and Ontario's 14 Local Health Integration Networks sponsored an event in April 2006 which showcased their remarkable creativity, intelligence and drive, Celebrating Innovations in Health Care Expo.

The Expo drew more than 2,000 participants from across the province who gathered in Toronto to share progress, achievements, partnerships, and innovations. The diversity of innovations showcased at the Expo reflects the tremendous strides being made across all sectors of the health care system.

The Health Care Improvement Practices Registry

To accelerate improvement in health outcomes, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care is pleased to provide Ontario health care providers with a vehicle for sharing information about their quality improvement practices. This on-line registry of practices is designed to leverage their tremendous wealth of knowledge and experiences.

Currently, the registry captures over 80 practices that fall under one (or more) categories reflecting the key themes of the Celebrating Innovations in Health Care Expo. The categories include :

  • Meeting Community Needs through Integrated Care
  • Innovations in Health Human Resources
  • Improving Efficiency through Process Redesign
  • Improving Quality and Patient Safety
  • Innovations in Health Information Management

To be part of the registry, submissions must include an evaluation of the practice using quantitative measures.

All improvement practices included in the Registry have met minimum criteria, including an evaluation using quantitative measurements.
