Canadian War Museum announces the winners of four $1,000 prizes for students

Ottawa, Ontario, May 15, 2006 – The Canadian War Museum (CWM) has announced the winners of its annual History Awards, recently renamed the Colonel Douglas H. Gunter History Awards due to a generous bequest from Colonel Gunter's family through the Friends of the Canadian War Museum (FCWM). Announced in October 2005, this year's theme for the History Awards was "Peacekeeping and the Middle East".

The competition was also expanded this year to encourage submissions in a wider range of media, including text, visual art, web design and audio or video production. The announcement was made by Dr. Dean Oliver, CWM, and Colonel (Ret'd) Jerry Holtzhauer, FCWM, during the Organization for the History of Canada (OHC) Conference, which held a number of events at the Museum.

"We are very pleased by the number of excellent submissions in response to the Colonel Douglas H. Gunter History Awards," said Dr. Oliver, Director of Research and Exhibitions. "By broadening the scope of this year's competition, we felt we were encouraging creativity and diversity in submissions, and the results reflect this."

Jerry Holtzhauer of the FCWM added, "Colonel Gunter's family, in making the bequest, had a very specific objective — 'to help young people understand better the realities of war, especially both World Wars, Korea and peacekeeping'. This generous gift allows us to help the Canadian War Museum in fulfilling its National mandate, by funding initiatives such as this."

The winners are:
  • Drew Beesly, Kamloops, BC for his essay entitled "Middle East Peacekeeping: A Mirage in a Desert of Instability"

  • Natalie Fitkowsky, Winnipeg, MB for her poem entitled "Through Whose Eyes?"

  • Esther Anya Rees, Moose Jaw, SK for her untitled sculpture

  • Robert Sroka, White Rock, BC for his essay entitled "A Successful Failure: United Nations and Canadian Peacekeeping since 1956 in the Middle East"

The Canadian War Museum History Awards have been in existence since 1998. To date some $38,000 in prizes have been awarded to 29 students across the country.
