Meet Winston Churchill's biographer, Sir Martin Gilbert, at the Canadian War Museum

Ottawa, Ontario, June 19, 2006 — On June 28, just days before the 90th anniversary of the beginning of the Battle of the Somme, join world-renowned historian Sir Martin Gilbert as he discusses his soon-to-be-released book, The Battle of the Somme: The Heroism and Horror of War. A book signing will follow.

From the publisher: A study of the five-and-a-half-month struggle on the Western Front, from 1 July to 18 November 1916, as seen through the words of the commanders, the officers and the soldiers, of whom more than 310,000 were killed: among them English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Australian, New Zealander, Canadian, Newfoundlander, South African, French and German.

Sir Martin Gilbert is a British historian, biographer and author of over 70 books. He is primarily known as the official biographer of Sir Winston Churchill, British Prime Minister during the Second World War, and for his books on the Holocaust and Jewish history. He was knighted in 1995 for services to British history and international relations.
