Summer Activities for Families at the Canadian War Museum

Ottawa, Ontario, June 29, 2006 — In conjunction with the popular exhibition Clash of Empires: The War That Made Canada 1754–1763, the Canadian War Museum has scheduled a number of family workshops and activities throughout the summer to bring this fascinating period of Canadian history to life.

More than 250 years ago, French, British and First Peoples collided in a historic struggle for North America. This exhibition presents the story of the first global war, which erupted in the backwoods of Pennsylvania, spread to the gates of Québec City and decided Canada's fate.

Gorgets and Shako Plates

A shako is a tall, cylindrical hat. The plate in front identifies the regiment. Get inspiration from the examples in the gallery and then craft your own shako plate and a gorget to wear around your neck.

The Musket

Combatants on all sides of the Seven Years' War used muskets. Learn how to roll cartridges and see how a musket works.

Build a Fort
July 15 to 21; August 26 to September 1
Learn about redans, redoubts and parapets and then create a fort with blocks and 18th-century fort designs.

Make a Medallion
July 22 to 28
Learn heraldry and symbols as you cast your own medallion to take home.

Toy Soldiers
July 29 to August 4
Make history in miniature! Learn about the uniforms of some of the regiments of the Seven Years' War and paint your own toy soldier.

Battlefield Medicine
August 12 to 18

Activities run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and are free with admission. More information is available by calling 819 776-8600 or 1 800 555-5621.
