Desert Crossroads at the Canadian Museum of CivilizationGatineau, Quebec, July 28, 2006 – In the midst of the Jordanian desert, the ancient city of Petra prospered at the confluence of the Silk Road and the Spice Route. On Monday, August 7, this desert crossroads comes to life at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, with Middle Eastern artisans and a market exhibit featuring Nabatean trade goods such as coffee, spices, rugs, and textiles. Take in the sights, sounds and tastes of Petra with mosaic, calligraphy and jewellery demonstrations, as well as a display of Middle Eastern foods, where you can sample treats such as Turkish Delights and traditional coffee.
This event will be set up in a souk-like environment, and will include a number of vendors and artisans displaying their wares. Pick up recipes for traditional dishes such as fatoush, couscous and tabbouleh. Take in performances of baladi dancing. Enjoy a display of rugs by Canadian Rug Traders, and a textile display by Nucreation Fashions.
