Celebrate harvest time with Mohawk Music and Dance at the Canadian Museum of CivilizationGatineau, Quebec, September 28, 2006 - Celebrate the harvest with the Keepers of the Eastern Door on October 7 at the Canadian Museum of Civilization. Presenting a traditional harvest celebration performance, these Mohawk singers and dancers from the Kanawake reservation in Quebec will once again dance up a storm in the Grand Hall.
Traditionally, the Iroquois held six seasonal festivals each year. One of these was the Harvest Festival, usually held in October and often coinciding with the full moon. The traditional celebration lasted a few days and typically involved dancing, singing, playing and feasting. As its name suggests, the Harvest Festival was held during the harvest when the community came together to celebrate and give thanks for the many gifts Mother Earth generously provided: corn, beans and squash.
Mohawk Music and Dance Keepers of the Eastern Door Saturday, October 7 at 2 p.m. Grand Hall Free with Museum admission
