An overview of cartography

I ntroduction

The following selection of maps from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century illustrates two major elements in the history of geography : the progress of cartography during these centuries and the increasing knowledge of the north american territory, due essentially to the explorations.

The texts and the selection of maps are the work of Edward Dahl, Early Cartography Specialist, National Archives of Canada, Ottawa.
