Acadie

The beauty of the trees Giovanni da Verrazano admired so much in what is now called Maryland and Virginia inspired the explorer with the names Arcadia and Larcadia. In 1603, Samuel de Champlain altered these words to designate the territory that was to become Acadie. He used Arcadie and, later, Acadie.
